Most baseboard heater roundups recycle the same bullet points. This one is different on purpose: real manufacturer spec tables (Fahrenheat PLF, QMark HBB, Dimplex PC, Cadet SoftHeat and F series), a cost model whose formula is printed on the page, and a sizing guide you can check against your floor plan.

Electric baseboard heat gets a bad rap because most buyers meet it in two moments: a January bill and a cold rental bedroom. The equipment itself is simple, durable, and completely silent. What is usually missing from the buying process is arithmetic: how many watts the room actually needs, what those watts cost per month at your rate, and what the spec sheet does (and does not) promise.

Two honesty rules govern this page. First, every spec below comes from a manufacturer or retailer spec sheet, labeled by source, and where a number does not exist we write N/A instead of inventing one. Second, the monthly cost figures are a cost model, not a measurement: the formula and its assumptions are printed right above the table so you can rerun the math with your own duty cycle and your own rate.

1. How they work: convection vs hydronic

Every resistance baseboard is a heating element in a metal housing along the base of a wall. Convection units heat air directly: cold air enters the bottom, warms, rises out the top. No fan, no moving parts, and therefore silent operation. All the noise ratings you see quoted for other heater types simply do not apply here; there is no fan to rate, which is why our spec tables carryN/A (convection, no fan) in the noise column.

Hydronic units add thermal mass. The element is submerged in a heat-transfer fluid inside a sealed tube; Fahrenheat describes the PLF element as submerged in an inert heat-transfer fluid inside a sealed 7/8" copper tube. The fluid keeps radiating warmth after the thermostat satisfies, holds heat longer through thermostat cycles, and runs at a lower surface temperature than an exposed element. The trade-off is slower response: a hydronic unit takes longer to bring a cold room up, in exchange for steadier output and fewer temperature swings.

2. Head-to-head: the spec tables

The Fahrenheat PLF series is the reference hydronic line: all models are 240/208V dual-rated, the element carries a 10-year limited warranty, and the full size ladder runs from 500W to 2,000W. Watt figures below are listed as 240V/208V; BTU/hr and amps are at 240V.

The other three nameplates cover the realistic shortlist. QMark's HBB is the other mainstream hydronic line. Dimplex's PC (Proportional Linear Convector) is the notable convection-with-thermostat option, and Dimplex markets its baseboards (including the Element, LC Linear, and Eclipse lines) on silent operation. 3. The monthly cost model (formula on the page)

Here is the entire model, no black box:

$/month = watts ÷ 1,000 × 20 hrs/day × 30 days × your rate ($/kWh)

20 hrs/day is a heating-season duty-cycle assumption, not continuous operation: a thermostat cycles the element off once the room is warm. Rerun the formula with your own duty cycle estimate and your own all-in rate from your bill.

Worked example for the 1,500W size class at the national average rate of 18.44¢/kWh (EIA data via the EnergyTools rate database, July 2026): 1.5 kW × 600 hours = 900 kWh, and 900 kWh × $0.1844 = $166.0/month. The full ladder:

One modeling caution: in a real house, multiple rooms run multiple heaters, and the thermostat duty cycle falls as the house warms, so a whole-home baseboard bill is not simply the table row times your room count. 4. Room sizing guide

The industry rule of thumb is 10 W per sq ft of floor area. It is a starting point, not physics: it assumes average ceilings and average insulation. Three reference rows:

10 W per sq ft is an industry rule of thumb; manufacturer room-size statements cited where the maker publishes one.

Adjust upward when the room fights you: in colder climates and older homes, 12-15 W per sq ft is common guidance, and vaulted ceilings or poor insulation increase the load further (more air volume and more heat loss mean the same floor area needs more watts). Under a window along an exterior wall is the standard placement, so the rising warm air washes the cold glass and draft zone. Two smaller units on opposite walls generally even out a room better than one long unit, and splitting 2,000W across two 1,000W circuits is often easier on the panel than one 2,000W load. 5. Hydronic vs convection: is it worth it

The honest answer is that it depends on how long you stay in the room. Hydronic thermal mass (the sealed fluid loop in the Fahrenheat PLF, QMark HBB, and Cadet SoftHeat) shines in spaces you heat for hours at a stretch: living rooms, bedrooms, home offices. The fluid coasts through thermostat off-cycles, the surface temperature stays lower (a real consideration with kids and pets), and output is steadier.

For a bathroom you heat for 30 minutes or a workshop you fire up on demand, the hydronic lag works against you: a plain convection unit (Cadet F series) or a convection model with a built-in electronic thermostat (Dimplex PC4015W31) gets there faster. 6. When baseboard heat pairs with solar

If baseboard heat is why your winter bill spikes, solar can carry some of it, with one structural caveat stated plainly: your heating load peaks in winter, exactly when solar production bottoms out. The same unit ranges from $134.6/month in Washington State to $299.3/month in California at those state average rates. Your actual runtime depends on your thermostat, the weather, and your insulation, so treat 20 hrs/day as a heating-season modeling assumption, not a guarantee.

What size baseboard heater do I need for my room?

Start with the industry rule of thumb of 10 W per sq ft: a 100 sq ft room wants about 1,000W, a 150 sq ft room about 1,500W, and a 200 sq ft room about 2,000W or two 1,000W units. Hydronic units (Fahrenheat PLF, QMark HBB, Cadet SoftHeat) run the heating element through a sealed liquid-filled tube, so the fluid keeps radiating warmth after the thermostat clicks off, holds heat longer, and runs at a lower surface temperature. That suits rooms you occupy for long stretches. Plain convection units (Cadet F series, Dimplex PC) respond faster and suit spaces used briefly, like a bathroom or a home office you heat on demand. How many amps does a 1,500W baseboard heater draw?

Per the manufacturer spec sheets, both the Fahrenheat PLF1504 and the QMark HBB1504 draw 6.3A at 240V. At 208V the same 1,500W models run at 1,125W. Amps matter for circuit planning: a single 240V circuit can serve multiple baseboards only up to its breaker rating, which is an electrician's call, not a guess.

Can solar panels offset baseboard heating costs?

Partly, and with an honest caveat: baseboard load peaks in winter, when solar production is at its lowest.
