Is Solar Battery Storage Worth It? A Cost-Benefit Analysis
Solar battery storage allows you to store excess solar energy for use during nighttime, cloudy days, or power outages. But is it worth the additional cost?
The Case For Batteries
Batteries keep the lights on during outages and let you use more of your own solar production instead of buying from the grid. In areas with time-of-use rates, they can significantly reduce your electricity bills.
The Cost Factor
A typical home battery system costs $10,000 to $15,000 installed. Note that the federal residential solar tax credit (Section 25D) expired on December 31, 2025 following the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), so no federal residential tax credit is available for 2026 installations.
Our Verdict
Battery storage makes the most sense if you experience frequent outages, have time-of-use rates, or want to maximize self-consumption of your solar production.
